What is the difference between a strategy for your technology team, a roadmap, and goals for the coming year?
IT strategies today are focused on digital transformation and business capability. The strategies need tight alignment with the business. They need to include data analytics, and automation, avoid duplicate activities and maximize current capabilities. Strategies are often high-level and provide information for the coming three to five years.
IT roadmap builds upon the strategy. This is often a timeline showing the milestones to achieve the strategy. Common milestones include gathering requirements, design, testing, building, pilot, and full implementation. The goal of the roadmap is to communicate with customers and within IT groups. Connected roadmaps help IT teams ensure we are coordinating our work.
IT goals come from the roadmaps. Each team and team member has detailed annual goals. These come from the roadmaps. The items on the roadmaps will not achieve themselves. Teams and individuals should have goals aligned with the roadmaps to support success.
Do you have these things for your Information Services Department? What about your division? We often lean on the organization-level version of these things, perhaps developing them at the holistic IT Department level, but rarely take them down to our team so that we can help our team connect their work to the fantastic work our organizations are doing.
